Suncoast Co-op wins local Sustainability Award

Last week our co-op was awarded with a Sustainable Business award from Earth Charter US. MBA student from University of Tampa (Right Ghadeer) and Herb US Earth Charter committee chair (Left) presented the award. Thanks to Barbara, Audrey, Rick, Eric and Loretta the founding board members for a year ago coming together to form a local food co-op for our Suncoast area. All of us worked really hard for the co-op to get where we are. The time is right and has come for local food in our area! Together we can create a local food economy. Also a big thank you to the volunteers of the co-op, all of our Growers, the members for supporting the co-ops growth and all the patrons who buy fresh local food! We as a community make this happen together, we all want fresh chemical free food available to the community.

Free Film Showing: King Corn
Tuesday, April 30, 2013 at 6:00pm
5939 Main Street New Port Richey Library

King Corn is a feature documentary about two friends, one acre of corn, and the subsidized crop that drives our fast-food nation. In the film, Ian Cheney and Curt Ellis, best friends from college on the east coast, move to the heartland to learn where their food comes from. With the help of friendly neighbors, genetically modified seeds, and powerful herbicides, they plant and grow a bumper crop of America’s most-productive, most-subsidized grain on one acre of Iowa soil. But when they try to follow their pile of corn into the food system, what they find raises troubling questions about how we eat—and how we farm.
