Lettuce Beat Crime update!

Dear Friends at the Suncoast Co-Op: Thanks so much for your support of the New Port Richey Environmental Committee’s presentation to the City Council last night, and the opening of the Seed Exchange and Community Gardens project yesterday morning. Thanks also for your sincere interest and engagement with the various projects we are working on.

Your presence yesterday was as heartening as it was generous. I know how busy we all are — and I know how challenging it can be to make it out to even one event, let alone two. Your tremendous show of support was extremely beneficial to creating the community context for our projects, and a wonderful assist to the favorable reception we received from the Council. On behalf of the Environmental Committee, and quite personally, from my heart, I am sincerely appreciative. The ongoing work and vision of the Co-Op is not lost on me — not for a minute, not for a second.

As some of you may know, I am a grower-member of the Co-Op, and my interest and support of the mission is unflagging. I know the same is true for all of you. Our inspired and talented leaders are mapping out an exciting new future for local-sourced food and sustainable agriculture — not just for those of us fortunate enough to be active members of the Co-Op, but for the entire community. They and we are making a difference, and it shows.

It certainly was shown yesterday at the two events. By taking the time to come out yesterday, you stand as witness and testament to the considerable community support that exists for projects such as those being birthed in New Port Richey. You (we) reveal in powerful and substantial ways the depth and breadth of commitment to a sustainable future. I am certain that the success of our report and proposals to the City Council of New Port Richey was reinforced in powerful substantial ways by the presence of so many from the Co-Op. What a difference that made!

Of course, the active assistance many have given to various projects, such as the Seed Exchange, Tasty Tuesday Market, and Earth Day makes an enormous practical difference as well. That kind of hard work and day-to-day discipline is not overlooked. That is what builds a stronger community and shapes a kinder sweeter world. Kindness and sweetness are the fruits of working together and sharing the gifts that we have in the spirit of cooperation. It makes a difference, and it is appreciated. You make a difference and you are appreciated — not just by me but by the entire community.

Thanks for helping build a sustainable future and sharing with me an immediate world of Good.

With Sincere Appreciation,

Dell deChant

Volunteer information: Would you like to support the growth of the local food movement where you live?

Hello All Members and customers of the Suncoast Co-Op

Do you believe it is already past the middle of August? It is seed planting time. Dave has provided an awesome chart about when the best time to plant seeds or if you chose seedlings. Harvest Calendar for Zone 9

If you’re from the North like me planting a garden at this time of the year is unusual but it is the time to
begin thinking “Garden Time” if you want produce through next May and June.

Concentrating on this time to get the gardens started and productive is NOW. In 60 days or so from when we plant we will have some produce. Hopefully if we plant enough we can all become growers
and sell our produce at the Co-Op Market too.

Our Markets are open and becoming more popular as more people hear about us. As you shop in the on-line market you can see that more and more items are being added on a regular basis.

I am writing to you because as our market continues to grow we need volunteers to help at the
markets. We need lots of volunteers. The founders of the Co-Op have given unceasingly of their time and talent for more than a year and with the help of volunteers they can take a break once in a while.

Tuesdays New Port Richey library courtyard, Main St. 9:30-2pm

First Fridays in Downtown New Port Richey, Cavalier Sq 4:30-9pm
Fresh Friday Night Farmers market

Saturday Habitat for Humanity Restore, 4131 Madison St 10-2pm

Nov 8,9,10 Ecofest at Sims Park, and Starkey Park All day affair
Pasco Ecofest

And many other great events!

We will have a training period to familiarize all volunteers about the processes needed to check in produce and fill our member’s orders and in the garden also if you would like to learn to grow food.

Our first information session will be August 26 at Barbara’s home 6410 River Road New Port Richey at 7:30 The
goal of the group meeting will be begin a schedule for days and hours that volunteers can sign up for.

RSVP not required but appreciated. Contact janet.cswercko@verizon.net or reach me on my cell 727-743-6040 If you have a date in mind and would like to sign up and cannot make the meeting please call me.

Meeting more like minded people is one of the best things that I get out of volunteering at the market.

Exchange of ideas and experiences helps us all to grow a better garden thereby ability to live a healthier life.

Looking forward to hearing from you all.

At New Port Richey Library 5939 Main St. New Port Richey FL.

Join with your Community ~ Tues, Aug. 20 at 11AM
for the launch of NPR Library’s Seed Exchange and the City’s Community Garden Program.
This is a unique opportunity for the New Port Richey Community to be part of history as together we initiate sustainability projects that are models for the state of Florida.

Check out Seeds at Your NPR Public Library and Start your Own Community Garden!

The library’s seed exchange, one of a kind within our watershed, promotes the concept of growing your own healthy, affordable food, harvesting seeds, and sharing with others.

The New Port Richey Community Garden Project, based on the City’s new urban agriculture ordinance, encourages the use of vacant lots for gardening by local residents.Together, these two initiatives spur ecological awareness, encourage local food production, and inspire community involvement.

The event begins at 11AM at the New Port Richey Public Library where Tasty Tuesday, a weekly organic farmers’ market held in the library courtyard, will also be taking place.

You’ll hear from community leaders about how to: establish your community garden, check out heirloom seeds at Your NPR Public Library, participate in free gardening workshops and enjoy an upcoming environmental film series.

At 12PM, see the film “Urban Roots,” a documentary on how urban agriculture revitalized the depressed communities and spirits in Detroit.
